Fireside chat: how digitalisation can help societies adapt to climate change
Daoping Wang joined Qiancheng Wang and Emily Farnworth at Hughes Hall to discuss how digital technologies can turn climate-risk evidence into faster, more practical adaptation decisions.
At a Centre for Climate Engagement fireside chat hosted by Hughes Hall, Daoping Wang and Qiancheng Wang joined CCE Director Emily Farnworth to discuss how digitalisation can support climate adaptation.
The conversation addressed three connected questions: which adaptation challenges are most urgent, how digital technologies can improve risk monitoring and assessment, and which governance innovations are needed to deploy these capabilities at scale.
As climate hazards intensify, emerging technologies can help transform large and fragmented datasets into timely, quantitative, and actionable indicators. Better monitoring, modelling, and communication can enable decision-makers to identify emerging risks earlier and compare possible responses before committing resources.
The discussion also emphasised that successful digital adaptation depends on institutions as much as technology. Case studies presented during the event showed why data access, coordination, public trust, and fit-for-purpose governance must develop alongside technical capability.
